Croatians will go to the polls to vote for a new president on 22 December presidential elections. Gong, a Croatian civil society group, examines the risks of online disinformation and hate speech on social media.
Their main finding is that the country is at a medium risk of online disinformation overall. The study highlights that Croatian society trusts traditional media more than social media. The latter, however, have become more and more important as a platform for political debates. The risks involved mainly concern potentially inflammatory rhetoric, hate speech and disinformation used by candidates to potentially target national minorities and immigrants.
Despite the medium risk level, there is no specific evidence that the upcoming elections will be attacked by foreign actors.
